Opuntia ficus-indica is a red prickly pear variety that originates from multiple wild ancestors.  It produces delicious red and mostly spineless cactus pears.  These fruits are called different names in the different regions that they can be found, these names include Barbary fig, cactus fruit, Indian fig, or Nopal.

The leaves of this cactus are also edible and are believed to have many health benifits.  This is due their vitamin, mineral and high antioxidant content.

The cacti make for great low-maintenance desert landscaping plants and can grow to over 10 feet tall in their natural habitats.  They can even thrive in areas with poor soil and extreme heat.
