A gift that keeps producing

Garlic and onions are ready to pull next summer. Sunchokes come back year after year once they're established. It's a good fit for someone just getting started, or for the gardener who already has everything.

Grow your own saffron

Saffron corms flower in the fall. Each flower gives you three red threads you can pick and dry. They do fine in a pot if you don't have garden space.

Planting basics

Garlic: break the bulbs into cloves and plant them pointy end up, about 2 inches deep and 6 inches apart.
Saffron: set the corms 3 to 4 inches deep in soil that drains well.
Onion sets: plant about 1 inch deep, pointed end up, 4 to 6 inches apart.
Sunchokes: plant 4 inches deep somewhere they have room to spread, since they come back every year.

Garlic and saffron like a cold winter in the ground. In very cold areas, keep the onion sets and sunchokes somewhere cool and dry and plant them as soon as the soil can be worked in spring. Results depend on your climate, soil and planting time.
